Our Story

A Little Bit of History...

Before the founders of Fernwood Candy, George and Leah Wood became known for their delicious chocolate candies, they were in the grocery business until they chose to open ice cream and candy stores in Utah in February 1947. Then, George and Leah had to decide what they would call their new candy company.

George said to Leah, “Momma, would you have ever dreamed when we were newlyweds in our little honeymoon cottage on Fern Street, near the State Capitol building, that we would someday be in the ice cream and candy business?” Leah reminisced about their experience and replied, “Maybe we ought to call the business Fernwood. Fern Street was mighty sweet, and we hope that is what our business will be. It surely would be another romantic beginning.” George smiled and said, “Fernwood. Hmm… Fernwood Candy. I like that!” And that is how Utah candy store Fernwood Candy got its start on February 8, 1947.

Continuing the Chocolate Legacy

When George and Leah passed, their son Richard Wood and his wife, Lorraine, took on the role of small business owners and continued providing high-quality Fernwood chocolate candies to local Utahns and customers across the country. What kept them going throughout the years? The famous Fernwood Candy Mint Chocolate Sandwiches. These tasty chocolate treats have been a customer favorite since 1959. During a trip to the East Coast, George and Leah Wood were given a recipe from a local candy shop owner that became the famous Mint Chocolate Sandwich recipe Fernwood customers know and love today.

In August 2016, Mike and Linda Staheli purchased Fernwood candy from Richard and Lorraine Wood, who were looking to retire.
